Serena Williams has undergone a physical transformation after retiring from tennis. Frequent visitors to her Instagram page were well aware of that fact prior to Thursday, when the tennis legend revealed she lost more than 30 pounds after taking a weight-loss drug.
Williams, 43, said she lost 31 pounds after using a GLP-1, during an appearance on the Today show. Williams did not reveal which GLP-1 she was taking, though it should be noted that she's a paid spokesperson for Ro, a health-care company.
Williams said the birth of her first daughter played a role in Williams' decision to get on a weight-loss drug, per Today.com.
"This all started after I had my (first) kid," she continues. "As a woman, you go through different cycles in your life. ... No matter what I did — running, walking, I would walk for hours because they say that's good, I literally was playing a professional sport — and I could never go back to where I needed to be for my health. Then, after my second kid, it just even got harder. So then I was like, OK, I have to try something different."
Williams received plenty of attention for her weight loss in July, when she posted pictures of herself in the gym.

GLP-1s have become a popular tool for weight loss in recent years, though some are also used to treat diabetes. The drugs mimic a hormone that is produced after the body eats, leading to patients feeling full more quickly.
After a two-decade career in tennis, Williams retired from the sport in 2022. She's widely considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time and won 23 Grand Slams during her reign at the top.
