The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is on lockdown after reports of a possible active shooter on campus, the university said on social media Aug. 21.

"All individuals on the UTC campus should remain on lockdown," the university said in a statement. "Do not move unless directed by law enforcement. Campus facilities are currently being searched by police."

Earlier, the university said it had recieved reports of a "possible active shooter in the University Center or Library."

Around 1:45 p.m., the university said law enforcement was completing a search of the campus and that "no threat has been identified at this time."

The Chattanooga Police Department said around 1 p.m. that it was working to confirm reports of shots fired, and had "not located any victims."

The local police department and campus officers were joined by the Tennessee Office of Homeland Security, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is a public university that was founded in 1886 and is part of the larger University of Tennessee system, which has campuses in Knoxville and Martin. The Chattanooga campus served nearly 12,000 students in the 2024 fall semester, according to the university.
