Felicity Huffman joins the cast of Doc on Fox for season 2 as Dr. Joan Ridley, the new chief of internal medicine
Watch her in action in the exclusive first trailer from the season, where it's clear she and Amy (Molly Parker) aren't exactly going to see eye-to-eye
Doc season 2 premieres Sept. 23 on Fox
When Fox's Doc premiered in January, the main focus of the story was subtraction: Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker) was in a car crash and woke up from a traumatic brain injury missing the past eight years of memories.
Now, in season 2, there's an addition: Felicity Huffman as Dr. Joan Ridley, Amy's former mentor and friend — and the new chief of internal medicine at the hospital.
In the exclusive first look at the trailer, fans can finally see Dr. Ridley in action — and she and Amy aren't exactly on the same page.
"I used to run this department, and now, I'm an intern," Amy tells her, explaining what happened and that she's essentially having to restart her career in order to re-learn the last eight years of medical advancements. But soon it becomes clear that Jane has her concerns about Amy.

As Amy's ex-husband and the hospital's chief medical officer Dr. Michael Hamda (Omar Metwally) hires Joan, she insists, "I get complete autonomy." This may be a bit tricky for Michael, who was protective of Amy in the first season.
Moments later, Joan speaks to the hospital staff: "In two months, there will be an official evaluation. Some of you will not survive it." Not surprisingly, the staff looks nervous, especially third-year resident Dr. Sonya Maitra (Anya Banerjee) and first-year resident Dr. TJ Coleman (Patrick Walker).
When Jane tells Amy she's reviewing her cases, she reminds the doc, You are still auditioning."
"Well, I'm not going anywhere," Amy responds curtly. "I have lives to save."

The new season picks up approximately two days after the events of the season 1 finale, when Amy's pre-accident boyfriend, Dr. Jake Heller (Jon Ecker), sees her kiss Michael, who has remarried and is expecting a baby with his new wife.
"My ex-husband's having a baby with another woman, and I have a really good man who loves some other version of me," Amy explains to her best friend, neuropsychiatrist Dr. Gina Walker (Amirah Vann). "Without my memories, I'm trapped in time. I need my life back. Healing people is the thing that I love most."
Later, Amy adds, "I need to be the doctor that I was. I will do whatever it takes." She also admits she's been having "weird flashes" of memories and suggests, "My brain's trying to warn me about something. I need to find out what happened before it's too late."
It's clear this conversation evolves into Amy and Gina trying some rather extreme recovery techniques which could hinder Amy's ability to practice medicine.
"That treatment protocol you've got her on — it'll make her emotional, distracted, irrational," Joan tells Gina. In another scene, Joan warns both Gina and Amy, "You need to stop this nonsense before you ruin both of your careers."
But a couple love triangles, a steady flow of patients with life-threatening ailments and people's jobs hanging in the balance aren't the only storylines on tap this season. The trailer concludes with a man firing a gun in the hospital and TJ charging toward him. It's unclear if TJ — or anyone — is hit.
One person not in the trailer is Dr. Richard Miller (Scott Wolf). In season 1, he took over as chief of internal medicine following Amy's accident, which happened just as she'd discovered that he'd made a mistake that killed a patient and then covered it up. At the end of the season, that error came to light, and Dr. Miller was fired.
Doc season 2 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
